After LeBron James took his talents straight from high school to the NBA, he already had a shoe deal worth $100 million with Nike. The first shoe to his name was the Air Zoom Generation. As a kid from Cleveland, I still remember his first game against the Sacramento Kings quite clearly. He happened to be wearing a pair of thes shoes, while he flew through the air for his first NBA dunk.

As with most shoes I bought at the time, I liked how they looked and gave zero credence to how they actually performed. It was just weird though, there was this mesh pocket thing that you put your foot inside of, which resulted in some space between the back of your foot and the plastic outer. Kind of odd, but kind of cool at the same time. Actually, not that cool. Definitely ended up with some blisters from these.

Some are, but not all. In general, because of the support and protection they aim for, tennis shoes feel harder and stiffer than running shoes, but in different amounts depending on the brand and on the shoe itself.

Running shoes are good for running, and tennis shoes are good for tennis! And yes, when you play tennis you also "run", but in a completely different way from how you'd run on a track or road. You sprint, stop and change direction all the time, and run sideways much more than forward. Which is what tennis shoes are built for, and why they offer your feet that extra lateral support you need to avoid ankle injuries and excessive blisters.

For example, grass courts are typically the most slippery and delicate, which is why grass-court tennis shoes have pimples underneath (for traction) and they're more flat than others (to reduce damage). On the contrary, hard-court tennis shoes are usually tougher and durable as they get worn out more easily, and they have more cushioning, support and protection. Clay-court shoes, on the other hand, have a very specific pattern (aka herringbone pattern) on the outsole to maximize grip and stability.

I lost count of how many times I wondered whether playing tennis in running shoes ? was a good idea or not, so I figured I'd share my humble opinion on the subject now that I finally have one! You know, I'd be really happy if my years of trial and error didn't go to waste ?, but helped someone else instead ?.

Now that you know my opinion on whether or not you should invest on tennis shoes, let me also share (and debunk) the assumptions I used to make before banging my head ? and figuring out the truth! I'm pretty sure you may have similar thoughts, so why not clear a few doubts right away?!

?? MY EXPERIENCE: I've recently bought the Women's ADIDAS Adizero Ubersonic 3 and OMG, I've never even thought such feather-weight tennis shoes existed! Whenever I play in them (always!) I literally feel like flying ?. This is not my first pair of Adidas, and certainly won't be the last: I'll stick to it for sure!

True, but for their own sport! Running shoes are good for running, and tennis shoes are good for tennis! ?? MY EXPERIENCE: I've played tennis (on hard court) wearing running shoes for years ?. Until I twisted my ankle during a match and had to stop playing for a month, waiting for it to recover. Never again ?! Oh and did I mention the countless, ultra-painful blisters I collected during those years due to my feet moving around as a result of the little lateral support? And just so you know, with ultra-painful I mean I had half of my foot opened up! Sorry for the a-bit-disgusting details ?, but at least you know what to expect from using running shoes for tennis!

Not really! I've just recently discovered this, and I was like 'WTF?! Seriously?'. Well, turns out that different surfaces require different tennis shoes! Not just to reduce damage to the court, but also because of their intrinsic characteristics and conditions.

?? MY EXPERIENCE: I've never played on grass, so I cannot talk about it. But for clay and hard courts, yes, I have 2 different pair of tennis shoes. The truth is, I wouldn't feel comfortable at all playing with my clay shoes on hard court, as I find them too stiff and grippy for that. And at the same time, I would never wear my hard-court tennis shoes on clay, as they're too dynamic and I'd most likely lack stability.

?? MY EXPERIENCE: Before buying my new beloved Adidas, I've actually purchased another pair of tennis shoes: the Wilson Kaos-Comp. And guess what? I wore them for one week and then said goodbye to them ??. For good. My feet couldn't breathe: they were literally suffocating! Which wasn't surprising at all, since the first feeling I had when trying them on was they were warm and cosy. Lesson learnt!

Hope you found this blog interesting and useful. You know, I wish I had read about how vital are tennis shoes (even on hard court) before I twisted my ankle! If so, leave me a clap (or two) so I know you did ??.

ried since my departure, let him take an honorable honest girl to wife, even if she has not much temporal means, if only he can pay the passage over. Whoever desires to come over here, he can call upon Mr. Ritter in Bern. If you, my son, wish to undertake this journey, keep God always before your eyes, and also if you do not wish to come, so that we may enjoy and see one another sometime up above with spiritual eyes in Heaven.

April 8, 1711.With service, duty and greeting, dear and faithful father, mother, brothers and sisters, children and relatives, and all good friends. With regard to myself, I live well and happy and would not wish to have remained at home. I am also married to Margaret Pfund of Zweysimmen. As far as the land is concerned it is very hot, many brooks, and much forest. The natives or Indians are black, half naked, yet clever and sociable, unbelievers, unsuited for work. I will not praise much nor complain. If one has money and property, gold and silver, he can be master just as in Europe, but I will say that for a workman or a poor man it is better there than here. He can get land as much as he needs. He can keep as much stock as he is able. Swine cost nothing to keep. Cattle go the whole year on pasture, become fat and good to butcher by themselves. They make no hay. It is true that many a one has up to a thousand head or more of cattle and hogs.

Herewith you are again greeted father and mother, brothers, sisters, children, and all good friends. Greet for me Uhli Treut especially, and his whole house, Hans Klasner, and his dear wife, Rufascher and his whole house. If I have injured anyone or done anything to anyone please forgive me for it, as God, in Christ forgives us. I wish you all prosperity from God. May he bless your work and the fruit of your labor from now on till into eternity. Amen.

With my duty and greeting dear and faithful Cousin, Christen Eggen; and your whole house. If I could hear that you were well it would rejoice me. As far as my condition is concerned I am well and live contented, and do not wish that I had remained at home. As far as the land is concerned, it stands like this. Whoever has riches, gold and silver, can be master just as in Europe, but I will say that for a poor man or workman it is better there than here. If he wishes to work for day wages he gets a half crown for every day, in produce or stock. Gold and silver are rare. He can.get as much land as he has need of. He can keep as much cattle and swine as he is able, and the swine become, of themselves, fat and good to butcher. Cattle go on pasture the whole year. I say that many a one here has up to a thousand head of cattle or more. The country is hot, uncultivated, many streams of water, great forests. The natives or Indians are black, half naked, yet sociable; but it is to be hoped that the land is tolerably fruitful. Still I would not advise nor cause any one to come here on account of the costly and difficult voyage over the terrible and wild sea. But yet, for my part, it has not gone badly with me; but for old people and young children it is difficult. It has gone slowly with us here because of the expensive and hard war times. 041b061a72
